In John chapter 5, Jesus is speaking on the Sabbath, and the religious leaders were there to persecute him.

John 5:24, 25 “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word, and believes him who sent me, has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life. Very truly I tell you, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live.

So, the time that is now, is the time to hear god’s word and be saved. Later, Jesus testifies that many of those hearing him will not be saved because they will not accept His testimony, instead choosing to labor at studying the scriptures;

John 5:39,40 “You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life.”

God’s word is powerful, but when we choose not to believe, we forfeit the greatest gift that God desires to give us. Even as Christians who do believe and are saved, we can and often do, choose to selectively accept what God’s word says. We choose to believe a lie that we hear in our head, either from the evil one, or from our own damaged past. Things like “I’m no good, God won’t heal me because I’m not worthy”. We choose to deny what God says is true. For example;

Romans 8:28-30 “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. For those God foreknewm he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son,o that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.”

We have been justified, and Christ will also glorify us. It may be hard to believe, but God’s word is clear, so pray with me like the man who responded to Jesus in Mark 9:24 “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief”. Lord Jesus purify me from my unbelief, whatever the cost.
