My life seems to always be full of activity. Get up, get dressed, go to work, work till meeting time, report on progress, go eat lunch, get back to work, work harder to get as much as possible done,, go home, watch TV, go to meetings, watch more TV, go to bed, get up, repeat over and over again. I don’t know about you, but I feel like I am always running, here, there and everywhere. I have time for sleep, but very little time for rest.
Fortunately, Jesus made us a promise. In Matthew 11:28 it says: “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”. Well, I certainly fit into the first part of this verse, but what about the second part “rest”? Lets think about what Jesus is saying. If I am weary, He WILL give me REST. Not maybe, not perhaps, not possibly, but WILL. So, why don’t I feel rested, I certainly feel weary. What is the deal? Well, the “deal”, is pretty simple, lets look at verse 29: “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”.
Hmm.. it seems I can only “acquire” this rest, if I do two things. First, take Jesus yoke, which is simply to do what Jesus wants me to do, no more and no less, and the second is like it. I just need to learn from Jesus as I do what He tells me to do, and I WILL find rest for my soul.
So, If I don’t feel His rest, and you can be sure that there are many times that I don’t, then I just need to pause, and consider what Jesus desires for me at this moment of my day, and let every other thing that is burdening my mind go as I enjoy the Rest that only comes as I am held firmly in Jesus arms.
The final promise is a wonderful affirmation, verse 30 says: “My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”. What more could I desire?
